“I’M RIGHT.”

The princess looked between her two friends, repeating the assertion for the second time. It hadn’t gotten far. Especially given its less-than-receptive audience.

The prince of the fae was remote, staring with the enchanting eyes of someone who might have been gifted with celestial beauty but was currently undergoing repairs. While the vampire was silently calculating how many wine casks it would take to stop whatever dangerous substance was leaking into the fortress from those haunting caverns.

He just hadn’t realized it was terium.

“You think it was—”

“Think about it,” the princess interrupted, suddenly eager now that she knew one of her best friends was merely sedated. “The guard at the gate was thrilled that you’d brought people as vibrant as Freya and Cosette, because most prisoners were ‘sickly kids from the village that didn’t last more than a few days’. But that doesn’t make any sense, does it? Because the children from Seth’s village are survivors. They grew up in the mountains—they’re strong. It wasn’t the guards or the slavers who were making them unwell—it was the terium leaching up through the ground.”

Ellanden stared a moment longer, then his eyes drifted to the shimmering rock.

“...put it down.”

Asher dropped it in a heartbeat, kicking it away for good measure. The princess still had a smear on her wrist, and while she did nothing to test the theory she was sure that if it had gotten even a little closer to her face she would have been sprawled out on the ground, same as the fae.

“I thought they were all destroyed,” Asher said quietly. “The mines. I thought the Damaris king destroyed them before the terium could be used against him and his armies.”

“They were destroyed,” Ellanden answered, pushing onto his elbows. “At least...they were supposed to be. My father told me terium is incredibly rare. To have found an entire mine...”

He trailed off as each of them considered it for the first time.

There were endless possibilities, none of them very good. There was a reason such potent weapons had been eliminated from both sides, and a massive body-count to support that reason.

“Do you think we should even tell anyone?” Evie asked tentatively, staring hard at the other two. “I mean, we’ll make sure no one goes down there. But this stuff...” Her eyes drifted to the piece Asher had recovered, glittering amidst a tangle of ferns. “It can be deadly. Even an accidental dose can be deadly. Healers stopped using it long before the mines were destroyed.”

Asher considered it thoughtfully. Ellanden was still trying to keep himself awake.

“We have to tell the others,” the vampire concluded, “and Seth will want to tell the rest of his pack. To be honest, I can’t blame him. If they’re going to be living right on top of the thing, they deserve to know what’s down there. We can tell the elders, let them do what they think is best.”

Evie nodded, secretly relieved that for once the decision wasn’t in their hands. She turned her attention instead to the fae—who was in the process of pushing himself off the ground.
